The architectural elements of structure, skin, and connections are emphasized in these awards. Using the familiar materials walnut, acrylic, and steel, reduced the amount of prototyping. This was crucial in order to fabricate 4 awards within the 10 available hours of build time.

Pallet Palette

“Pallet Palette” was a submission for the 2010 Access Arts Public Exhibition on Belle Isle in Detroit, MI. By directing sightlines, the project called attention to the beauty of the MacArthur bridge and the neglected Detroit Boat Club. The form of the structures echoed the clusters of foliage that they were nested between. They served as resting and gathering nodes for pedestrians, while reducing the site down to the human scale.

In order to eliminate waste discarded pallets and scrap steel were gathered from Rivertown and the nearby area. Pallets were coupled together to attain strength, while folds in the structures gave lateral support. Upon closing of the exhibition, all pallets were reused in the second experiment or given to salvagers, to be used once again for shipping purposes.
